Things to Do Before You Give Your iPhone For Service

Here Few Tips Things to Do Before You Give Your iPhone For Service

Delete Photos

Connect your iPhone to your computer and launch iTunes. Go to the photo tab in iTunes. Check Sync photos from and choose iPhoto or Aperture (whichever you will be using). If you don’t use either of these, uncheck the box. But remember this is where all your photos are stored so it might not be a good idea to delete them.

Once done, click on the Sync button and wait for all your photos to transfer across to your computer. To make sure they’re gone from both ends – iPhoto/Aperture and iPhone – open up iPhoto/Aperture and delete them off there as well by going into Preferences > Store (wherever the photos are stored) and deleting them manually one by one. Ensure this box is checked when you want to sync future photos.

Having a broken screen, dead battery, or a telephone that can’t charge can be exceptionally disappointing and take a ton of time in our regular routine.

If you do not use iPhoto or Aperture, then search for the folder that houses all your iPhone photos in Finder (or on Windows Explorer). Delete them off there too.

Delete Videos

Open up iTunes and go the iPod tab again. Uncheck Sync videos if it’s checked already (if you recorded videos on your iPhone, they’ll be synced here by default). If you do not use QuickTime player , delete those files as well, although you can always transfer them back from your computer later if needed. Delete photos as detailed above as well to make sure everything has been deleted from both ends – iPhone and computer .

Pre-emptive strike

If your iPhone is having problems or it’s new and you’re not sure what the problem might be, do this before handing it over for service. Delete all photos, videos (see above) and contacts (on iPhone go to Settings > Mail, Contacts , Calendars ). This way when they ask if you’ve backed up lately (which they always seem to do these days), you can confidently reply in the negative.

Note: You can restore your data from an on-device backup on iTunes (not iCloud ) after getting your iPhone serviced.

Wipe out caches

Go into Settings > Safari on your iPhone and tap Clear History then Clear Cookies and Data . On this same screen remove any website data that’s listed there too by tapping the red delete button.

Go to Settings > Mail, Contacts , Calendars and tap Clear Data under each option. Ensure this box is checked when you want to sync future contacts/calendar events.

Delete alarms

On your iPhone go into Settings > General then Reset . Scroll down until you see Reset All Settings . Tap that and confirm by entering your passcode if required. This simply resets all the settings on your device back to factory defaults which also includes any alarms you have set, so edit them now before they are deleted automatically when you reset your alarm settings again in a few minutes’ time. Delete photos as detailed above as well to make sure everything has been deleted from both ends – iPhone and computer .

Reset your iPhone

When handing in your iPhone for service, do this final step before sending it off. Go to Settings > General and tap Reset . Make sure Erase all Content and Settings is checked then tap that and confirm by entering your passcode if required. Ensure this box is checked when you want to sync future contacts/calendar events. When done, restore from backup (if you have one – see section on backing up below).

Delete Photos

Connect your iPhone to your computer and launch iTunes . Go to the photo tab in iTunes . Check Sync photos from and choose iPhoto or Aperture (whichever you will be using). If you don’t use either of these, uncheck the box. But remember this is where all your iPhone photos will be synced to, so if you want them to end up on your computer and not in iPhoto/Aperture then keep them checked.

Go into Photos (or iPhoto or Aperture) and delete all the images except the ones that are saved in iCloud such as Photo Stream (under Albums). Delete photos as detailed above as well to make sure everything has been deleted from both ends – iPhone and computer .

If you use iCloud’s Photo Stream for photo sharing , ensure it is unchecked under Preferences when you’re finished deleting all your photos off your iPhone. This way when they ask if you’ve backed up lately (which they always seem to do these days), you can confidently reply in the negative. You don’t want hundreds of photos from other people’s devices being pushed down onto your iPhone after it has been serviced.

Remove SIM card and reset network settings

On the back of your device, using a paper clip or another thin object, push up on the divot in the bottom left corner of your SIM tray to release it. Take out your SIM and use something with a point (like the paper clip again) to push-in on either side of the tray while you pull upwards until it comes out completely . Before inserting it into an iPhone 4S or later, make sure you take off any existing stickers which might be covering where to put in your SIM. For earlier models like 3GS , 4 , 4S , 5C , 5 and 5S , you can see an Apple support page on how to do the same thing .

Having removed your SIM, go into Settings > General and tap Reset . Make sure Erase all Content and Settings is checked then tap that and confirm by entering your passcode if required. Ensure this box is checked when you want to sync future contacts/calendar events. When done, restore from backup (if you have one – see section on backing up below).

Before putting the SIM tray back into your iPhone, ensure it has been reset by going to Settings > General and tapping Network then Reset under Reset Network Settings – make sure this box is unchecked before beginning. This will also give a fresh activation with whatever network service provider you are currently with.

The other thing to do before putting the SIM tray back into your iPhone is delete any other previous SIM cards that might be in there. You can use Find My iPhone or enter “*#06#” to find out the IMEI of your phone (not the same as your serial number which you also get from Settings > General) and check if it’s already registered on another network. If so, delete it. Then proceed to put in your SIM card before powering on your device.

Be sure to observe all local laws regarding cell phone usage while driving . As always, drive safely!
