The Jurong Region Line (JRL) is a Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) line that will serve the western part of Singapore. The seventh MRT line is coloured turquoise on the rail map. This is the third MRT line in the country to be constructed with elevated tracks with no underground tunnels. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) recently revealed the trains for the JRL line. The trains will have a distinctive teal colour. Read more to know the details of the new teal coloured JRL trains.
LTA Ordered 62 Teal Coloured Trains for the JRL Line
The JRL line will open for passenger services in 2027. LTA unrelieved 62 three-car trains that will be deployed when the JRL opens for service from 2027. The teal coloured JRL trains are manufactured by Korean rolling stock manufacturer firm Hyundai Rotem Company (HRC). LTA awarded S$416.5 million contract to HRC in February 2020. Some of the most identifiable features of JRL trains include:
• Emergency detrainment door
• Headlights (white LED), taillights (red LED), and foglights
• ATC mode indicator light
• Crew access switch with side step
• Door open summary lamp
• Dynamic Route Map Display above doorways
• Branched stanchion poles and three rows of overhead handgrips
• Reserved seats and wheelchair bay next to doorways
• Passenger communication unit and door unlock handle beside train doors
• Fire extinguishers in various locations
• Purpled coloured seats
• An equipment drawer contains a fire extinguisher, a first-aid kit, and room for other equipment
JRL trains will be fully automated. The front of the train includes a viewing area where passengers will be able to enjoy the scenery through the front windscreen. Some of the public feedback features include:

About the Jurong Region Line
The JRL will put 60,000 more households in Jurong within a 10-minute walk from a train station. It is expected to connect key areas of Jurong, such as the Jurong Industrial Estate, Jurong Innovation District, and the Nanyang Technological University (NTU). The JRL will have 24 stations, including three interchange stations at Boon Lay, Choa Chu Kang and Jurong East MRT stations.
“As the line travels through an already built-up area, each train will be made up of three smaller train cars, so that they are more manoeuvrable along tighter curves,” LTA said in a press release.
Earlier, LTA handed over 6 new stations of the Thomson-East Coast Line to SMRT Corporation. SMRT will start passenger services for stage 2 of TEL from August 28, 2021. SMRT Chairman, Seah Moon Ming, commented on the growth of the rail network: “For our rail network to continue to grow steadily, it is crucial for us to build bench strength and deepen the engineering capabilities that will sustain us through the long haul.”
Conclusion
The Jurong Region Line is the seventh MRT line in Singapore. The new JRL trains have a distinctive shade of teal. Singaporeans got a sneak peek into the new JRL line. HRC will deliver 62 three-car trains to LTA before the line starts operations in 2027.
